March 16, 2001: This is what remains of the old Crockett exit. The contractor
that is building the new interchange is really making progress on this
project. |
|
|
October 1, 2001: This is a picture
of the south tower getting built. The south tower is closest to the
city of Crockett. This is where engineers had been having a lot of
trouble. As they were driving the piles, the soil was too soft and
crumbly. They had a special drill shipped into America from Germany.
Waiting for the drill slowed down the construction time. |

October 1, 2001: This picture was taken
from the visitor center which is located in Crockett. You're looking at
the Vallejo side at what is called the north tower. We visit the
center every time we need information on the bridge. Last time, we went to
see Bart Ney... |
|
|
October 1, 2001: Here is Bart. He is the
public information coordinator for the Carquinez Bridge project. He keeps
us informed on the bridge. He tells us about bridge building and he gives
us the inside info on the bridge. He encourages us to keep the website
updated and informative. |

|
October 1, 2001 : During the time
they were waiting for the drill to be shipped in, they made a lot of
progress on the north tower. This is a picture of the north tower so far.
The north tower is closest to the Vallejo side. Compare this picture to
the picture in Year One. The tower has improved greatly. This picture was
shot from Maritime Academy in Vallejo. A few of our team live not too far
away from the north tower. Some of us can go to the Glen Cove Marina and
see the bridge. |
|
|
November 26, 2001:
This is the North Tower, the tower closest to Vallejo. The white boxes on
the towers are 16 ft. lifts. Inside of the boxes are cement forms. The
cement forms are for the next lift. |
|
|
November 26, 2001: This is the American
flag. It's in memory of those who died in the 9/11 incidents. |
|
|
January 14, 2002:
This is a wide range view of the north bound bridge. They just
finished the retrofit project. This project made the bridge earthquake
safe. This picture shows where the Napa River meets the San Francisco Bay
Delta at the Carquinez Strait. The factory in the foreground is the
C&H Sugar factory. |
|
|
January 14, 2002: The two towers in the
picture are going to hold up the road that connects the bridge to the
highway. A lot of progress has been made on this interchange in the town
of Crockett. |
|
|
January 14, 2002: This is a picture
of the anchorage. If you look closely, you will be able to see the
north and south tower. We took this picture from the Crockett
side. |
|
|
January 14, 2002: This is a picture of
the North and the South towers. The towers will be 430 feet high,
spanning 3,234 feet long. The present height of the bridge is 314
feet high. |
|

|
February 11, 2002: This is the closest
tower to Crockett. The workers work 24/7 to get the Crockett tower caught
up with the Vallejo tower. |
|
|
February 11, 2001: These are the two
towers together. The tower names are very interesting. The pier (on the
Crockett side) is called Pier One, the tower closest to Crockett is Tower
Two, and the tower closest to Vallejo is Tower Three. |
|
|
February 11, 2002: This is the Vallejo
Tower also known as Tower Three. |
|
|
February 25, 2002:
This is Tower Two. People have been coming up to Bart and asking if the
towers have been leaning. This is actually an optical illusion caused from
the fact that the towers have been designed to taper at the top. The
Crockett tower is catching up to the Vallejo tower because the
construction workers learned from the problems made on the Vallejo tower. |
|
|
February 25, 2002: This picture was taken
from the Crockett hills and shows both of the old bridges. |
|
|
February 25, 2002: Building the towers
takes a lot of concrete. On the Crockett side, the trucks can drive out
onto the trestle and pump directly from there. On the Vallejo side, the
trucks cannot get as close, so it takes longer. Sometimes, 300 to 400
trucks come to the site on a single pour at night when there's less
traffic. |
|
|
February 25, 2002: This a picture of the
interchange connecting Interstate 80 to the bridge in Crockett. C.C. Myers
construction company is working quickly to complete this phase of the
project. Since construction workers are working on the interchange above,
they sometimes have conflicts of work space with the bridge workers
below. |

Looking ahead... the cables are
beginning to arrive from England. They are being stored in a
warehouse on Mare Island. The roadbed, which is one of the last
pieces of the bridge to be completed is being made in Japan and will be
shipped over after all the cables are spun. They are hoping that the
towers will be completed late May or early June. In June or July, when
they start spinning the cables, the engineers will have to close the
Carquinez Strait. |
